New members are welcome. Please read the Extract from the Society’s Articles of Association to determine your eligible level of membership before completing the application form.

Extract from the Society’s Articles of Association

There shall be THREE classes of members, to be styled respectively FELLOWS, MEMBERS, and LICENTIATES, who shall be elected in manner hereafter provided.

1. FELLOWS: Candidates for Fellowship must be not less than 21 years of age, and must satisfy the Council that they possess one or more of the following qualifications:

(a) Professional shorthand writers (i.e. persons who are, and have for at least five years previously carried on business as, shorthand writers on their own account).

(b) Holders of Certificates approved by the Council for a speed not less than 140 words per minute, or such higher rate as the Council may from time to time determine, or of exceptional distinction in typewriting.

(c) Persons who hold a Teachers’ Certificate granted by the Society, or approved by the Council as affording evidence of teaching ability, and who have not less than three years’ experience as teachers of the subject in respect or which such certificate is granted.

(d) Possessors of such other qualification, either in addition to, or in substitution for, any or the foregoing as the Council shall from time to time determine.

Every candidate shall also furnish such evidence as the Council shall require of his education, character, and standing. Fellows shall be elected by the Council.

2. MEMBERS: Candidates for Membership Must satisfy the Council that they possess one or more or the following qualifications:

(a) Holders or Certificates approved by the Council for a speed not less than 100 words per minute, or such rate as the Council may from time to time determine, or holders or an Advanced Certificate in Typewriting.

(b) Persons who hold a Teachers’ Certificate granted by the Society, or approved by the Council as affording evidence of teaching ability in the subject in respect or which such certificate is granted.

(c) Possessors of such other qualification, either in addition to, or in substitution for, any or the foregoing as the Council shall from time to time determine.

Every candidate shall. also furnish such evidence as the Council shall require of his education, character, and standing. Members shall be elected by the Council.

3. LICENTIATES: Candidates for Licentiateship must satisfy the Council that they possess one or more of the following qualifications:

(a) Persons who are learning a recognised system or Shorthand but do not yet qualify for Membership.

(b) Persons holding a certificate in Typewriting or some other keyboarding skill, and sharing an interest in the general Objects of the Society.

(c) Possessors of such other qualifications, either in addition to, or in substitution for, any or the foregoing as the Council shall from time to time determine.

Every candidate shall also furnish such evidence as the Council shall require of his education, character, and standing. Licentiates shall be elected by the Council.
